Kelly Taylor - Port Lincoln Times

Introducing Fresh Eyre Nutrition’s very own founder, Kelly Taylor – a passionate Dietitian (and may I note, an excellent netball player too!). How could a Dietitian help you and why is your health so important to Kelly – let’s find out more:-

What does “healthy” or “health” mean to you?

A sustainable, common sense approach to healthy lifestyle, getting regular “maintenance/check ups” done … And having some fun too, in moderation!

Have you always been healthy? Please tell us a bit about your background.

Yes- still pretty young so not that much has really had time to go wrong yet! But as I get older I am more aware of the value of regular check ups- e.g. Dentist, doctor; as I see what can happen when people don’t look after their health through my job.

Why did you choose to become a dietitian and start your own business?

It appeared on a list of jobs on an aptitude/personality test and I applied after doing a previous uni course! I have an analytical chemistry background, so I already had a head start from an academic perspective. It is nice to build on the lab/academic skills I learnt and to use with clients once I had done enough study to get my qualifications. I decided to start my own business purely for a challenge – I saw it as the next step after working in the government system for a while.

How are you helping other people in their journey to improve their quality of life & why is helping people so important to you?

I think as dietitians we can give people the knowledge and skills to make smart choices for heir health. I don’t expect clients to be able to eat “perfectly” all the time, but to give them the skills to recognize better choices and hopefully, the motivation and inspiration to make those choices and enjoy healthy food most of the time! It is a very rewarding feeling to see people after they have successfully made change to improve their lives.

What is your view on natural and complementary options available for assisting people to make healthier changes, both physically and mentally?

Dietitians use an evidence-based framework with any of their practice, so all recommendations we make have to be supported by quality scientific evidence. Any sort of treatment, as long as it has a solid evidence base and is recommended carefully and appropriately to a client, is absolutely fine in my terms!

What advice do you have for anyone wanting to make change in their lives?

Think carefully about whether you can sustain the change. People can rush into lifestyle change like a bull at a gate and end up getting burnt out when it is unsustainable/unrealistic. So make changes that you can actually see yourself keeping up for some time! Think long term, rather than something you can only keep up for a few months!

What is one very valuable lesson you have learned on your own personal journey that you can share?

The value of persistence and patience.

What are some of your greatest personal and business achievements?

I honestly don’t try and over-analyse my own personal health too much. Just grateful that I am able to more or less do whatever I choose with no limitations.  As far as business goes, again I don’t try and over-analyse too much. Being able to enjoy the lifestyle I love and being able to support myself financially are things that I am proud of.

What are your ideal goals for your business and personally?

Probably just to keep the business moving onward and upward… I’m a pretty cruisy person and don’t tend to focus too much on goals to be honest. I think being happy and content with what I do (whatever that may be) is usually enough to keep me going!

Who (if any) are your inspirations?

Probably mum and nan for their hard work and ability to remain positive and hold it together during tough times. And my partner, Mark because he provides a great example for me to spend less and be smarter with my money!
