I had a school student interview me recently and he asked me how I could simplify the explanation of hypnosis, and the following is what I came up with:-

There is a Ship, which is you! Imagine your conscious mind is the Captain of this Ship. The conscious mind can only focus on very little at a time which is generally new information which needs analysing, then its dealt with or discarded, and therefore it is important that the Crew of the Ship knows what to do to keep things operating smoothly without (or very little) direction from the Captain! This Crew is your subconscious mind.

Over time the Crew has already learned the many things it needs to do, such as maintaining and operating the Ship, and therefore continues to complete these tasks daily in pretty much the same way it has since first learning them.

However some things the Crew has learned over time are no longer very useful or helpful, BUT because the Captain has so much information that needs it’s attention and trusts the Crew knows what to do without direction, the Captain hardly ever (if at all) reviews the Crew and its tasks.

It is my job as a hypnotherapist to have the Captain review the Crew, so it can change or improve the tasks so the Ship is operating efficiently and at its best!

When was the last time you checked whether YOUR crew was operating YOUR ship effectively, to ensure it is running at its best?!
